From our Superintendent:
The Graham School has had an amazing start to the 2009-2010 school year. The administration, staff, teachers, clinicians, student managers, teaching assistants and aides are truly a hard working team and our students beneficially receive the outcomes of their hard work, unity and expertise. As always, we continue to strive for continuous student improvement through our response to intervention and the PBIS data driven system. In addition to our premium staff, we also ensure high-quality professional development in the realm of behavior and academics. Our system includes regular collaboration with our campus administration and staff, as well as the development of a vision and consistent drive for academic achievement, student mental health and positive school climate.
As the holidays quickly approach, the staff and students at the Graham School have much to be grateful for and celebrate. Our students take pride in not only celebrating their own success, but extending their generosity to their local community and amongst their cohort.
Many of our students shared their holiday sprit with the local community when they participated in the national Make a Difference Day Project. A group of our middle and high school students visited the Hastings Senior Citizen group. They served them coffee and cake and handed out bags of delicious candy. The students also delivered pumpkins which were decorated by our elementary school art classes. Overall, it was a joyful and successful outing. The Martin Luther King Jr. High School students from the Graham School worked in collaboration with the Hastings-on-Hudson Town Supervisor. With combined efforts, they were able to launch a town clean-up project and arranged to volunteer to rake leaves and clean up the needed areas around town. The students were able to give back to the community that houses our very special school district.
The Readers Circle is a book club organized in the Martin Luther King Jr. High School. Our students meet twice a week to gather around a selected text and discuss the content itself and the students connections to the literature. The staff and students just finished reading The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. This is our first step toward developing a community of readers and we are very proud of our students in attendance. We hope the creation of this club will inspire others to join and become avid readers!
As the school year continues, we are working to maintain our linkages with social service and health agencies, community organizations, as well as local business, to enhance our school programs. Please see below for the most recent curriculum:
* Sarah Lawrence Theater Outreach Program: Graduate theater students run workshops with our students.
* Family Services of Westchester: This is a series of eight lessons where pre and post assessments are delivered to our high school students informing them about Adolescent HIV Prevention
* Hoff-Barthelson Music School: Instructors offer group lessons in guitar and steel drums.
The Graham School encourages and develops initiatives for our students to reach high academic achievements. This outcome is solidified with the important contribution of parent/guardian participation and support. We hope that the families of our students will participate in our advisory committees and continue to monitor their own childs achievement. Please contact the school if you have any questions, want to volunteer on our advisory committees or need additional information.
We at The Graham School would like to wish all of our staff, students and their families a very safe and happy holiday. Enjoy the upcoming Holiday Break and we look forward to seeing you all in January 2010!
