Book Buddies is a program that brings high school and elementary school students together within the district to share meaningful reading experiences. In both the training sessions and the buddy sessions, students practice using reading strategies such as visualizing, connecting, predicting, inferring and questioning to build comprehension skills. In addition, this partnership helps students build confidence as they practice reading with expression and fluency. Students find pleasure in the sharing of text.
By bringing younger and older students together, we create academic and personal bonds within a school community that emphasizes the role of literacy. This program supports the need for young students to share individual time with a reading mentor. It also serves the vital mission of building confidence and pride for our older students as they see themselves as role models and mentors to younger students as they help to instill a lifelong love of reading.
